I think you also have to remember the politics of the '60s to put the music into it's proper context. The Viet Nam war, feminism, the environmental movement and serious anti-discrimination legislation (along with the wave of urban riots) all began…

Listening to a great interview with Gamble and Huff who were the producers that made Philly International Records (what could be better than Back Stabbers?) (Major trivia: Expressway to Your Heart is about the Schuykill) So where are the great pro…

Three things that struck me about the Funk Bros: it's all about the tamborine (who woulda knowed?), they were integrated for all the right reasons and 3) they could make almost any singer sound good. On the more news from Detroit front: the Tigers…

Don't forget Sam and Dave (Hold on, I'm coming) and Eddie Floyd (Knock on wood). Oh dear, are both of these songs sexual double entendres? Shocking!

The White Soul thread can be interesting but you run into some pretty awful stuff. Hall & Oats have the ability to plant a stupid hook into my brain that will have me repeating some awful song for days. Nice harmonies but I'm not sure if there is an…

I also saw Bonnie back in my college days. Don't remember Freebo, but the show was in a chapel of some sort. Maybe the same tour? '78 or '79? I am familiar with John Hartford, but need to take a listen. Thatnsk for the heads-up. Anyone else care t…

Also in the Out of Print bin is John Hartford's Morning Bugle, which I have been led to believe (maybe incorrectly) is the near equal to Aereoplane. IMHO, Aereoplane consistently comes out in my top ten and is a true work of musical genius. This rec…

It's out of print. It was a CD on Bellvedere records from 1994. Maybe 1000 copies pressed. It says you wil pay 100.00 or more today. Dr. Rock said:Snipe: I'm with you. Michigan rocks! And I've been trying to find the online link to a CD in my colle…

Snipe: I'm with you. Michigan rocks! And I've been trying to find the online link to a CD in my collection called Michigan Brand Nuggets, which is out of print but featues the best Michigan garage-rock bands from the 60s. MC5, very early Bob Seger,…

California and New York are without question the magnets that pull talent in from everywhere to create the critical mass that has lead to some of the best music ever. I grew up around New York and lived and worked there for many years and there was…

The Dead at the White House

How cool is it that a U.S. President had the Grateful Dead over to the White House (or The Dead, to be respectful of the rest of the band members, who are in fact dead.)

When a suck ass conservative website like Politico writes a story about how Obama had the Dead over at 4:20 and the wingnuts are going crazy but the rest of the country Doesn't Care because we are all grown ups now and can appreciate substance over… Continue

Which State Rocks the Most?

Living in Michigan, it's clear to me that some states have a deeper appreciation of, and are more central to, rock music. And it's not just stuff from the past.

Michigan can lay claim to everything from Motown to the White Stripes, Bob Seeger to Eminem. Tom Petty opens his tours in Grand Rapids because people here goes ape shit over classic rock (at least the kind that hasn't atrophied beyond recognition.)

Some states haven't done squat, other are where people move to after they got their chop… Continue
