It depends what your perspective is, Laurence. In The Animals' various incarnations/lineups in their heydays from about 1964 through 1972, the band did record a lot of covers of R&B and blues-rock songs. But among the key players - Eric Burdon, Vic Briggs, Alan Price, John Weider and others - they are credited with several "significant" original tunes, including "Sky Pilot," "San Franciscan Nights," "Monterrey" and "When I Was Young." Their best-known "House Of The Rising Sun" is copyrighted by Alan Price as a remake of a "traditional" song in the public domain. And for true covers, "We Gotta Get Outta This Place" is a Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil composition and "Don't Bring Me Down" is a Gerry Goffin, Carole King and Jeff Lynne (of ELO fame) track from the Brill Building hit machine of the early 60s. So there's a mixed bag of covers and originals among the Animals hits. (Shameless self-promotion: I've got a new Animals playlist I'll be uploading shortly - watch for it! And rock on! -- Dr. Rock
